The national hockey team lost their first match of the Europe Tour when they were defeated 5-1 by Holland at the ZSV Schaerweijde stadium yesterday.
Malaysia conceded an early goal as their defense was unable to cut out a cross from the right that resulted in a simple finish by Jeroen Hertzberger.
However Mohd Amin Rahim converted a penalty corner to put Malaysia on level terms.
Roderick Weusthof then put Holland 2-1 ahead by converting a penalty corner, for the halftime lead.
A cross field pass from defence was well intercepted by the Dutch and Hertzberger finished well to give them a 3-1 lead.
Valentin Verga scored the fourth off a penalty corner rebound before Weusthof completed the scoring off another penalty corner.
" Overall the team played quite well although we took time to adjust to the quick tempo and passing of the Dutch team who were in their element with strong passes and very penetrative," said stand in manager Stephen van Huizen.
" We were not strong in our tackling and also passing, resulting in interceptions and turnovers.
" Our quick counter and speedy forwards gave them problems but their defence were calmer and more composed in dealing with our forwards.
" Kumar made some good saves and Razie was very commanding and strong in defence with some good tackles and passes. He was easily our best player in the match.
" Of the younger players, Faiz and Firhan did quite well."
Roslan and Asri were not registered for the match.
